Our goal is to teach you motivational interviewing-informed skills and techniques and empower you to use these skills to deliver the Small Steps for Big Changes diabetes prevention program. 

ABOUT

This course is for individuals who work or volunteer with organizations delivering the Small Steps for Big Changes program and who want to become a coach.

The training consists of 7 modules to introduce you to skills and techniques that will guide you to effectively communicate with your clients and to foster client- driven change

In the course Resource Centre, you’ll find links to websites, materials, handouts, and videos that offer additional support. In order to serve your clients well, it is important to understand the information presented in this training. Prior training and skills in behaviour change or in counselling are not needed.

The Small Steps for Big Changes online train-the-trainer program prepares new coaches to deliver the Small Steps for Big Changes program to individuals at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. The course was developed by the Diabetes Prevention Research Group of UBC in collaboration with other national experts and previous and current coaches.

STAFF

Dr. Mary Jung, Ph.D.

Mary Jung, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the UBC School of Health and Exercise Sciences, Director of the Diabetes Prevention Research Group, and founding Director of the Centre for Health Behaviour Change on UBC’s Okanagan campus. Dr. Jung’s passion is researching the self-regulation of health behaviours, primarily the promotion and adherence to physical activity and healthy diets in people living with, or at risk of developing, type 2 diabetes. Dr. Jung strives to see evidence-based lifestyle interventions implemented in the community to serve those in need. 

Kaela Cranston, M.Sc.

Kaela Cranston, M.Sc., is a Ph.D. student in the UBC School of Health and Exercise Sciences and a member of the Diabetes Prevention Research Group. Kaela’s research interests include partnering with communities to co-develop health programs and to implement them in sustainable ways, as well as to assess fidelity of coaches’ program delivery. Kaela is passionate about health equity and ensuring that all individuals are provided with safe and appropriate healthcare and opportunities. Kaela is the research group’s resident expert in motivational interviewing and has trained a number of current and previous coaches to deliver the Small Steps for Big Changes program.
